6.4 Curta1947
Kurt Herzstark
The Curta, a small mechanical calculator resembling a pepper grinder, was the work of an Austrian engineer, Curt Herzstark. Of Jewish origin, after the Nazi invasion he was interned in the Buchenwald concentration camp. The Nazis put him to work on the development of a miniaturized calculating machine. Fortunately, Herzstark managed to survive and completed his machine after his liberation in 1947, selling it as a free citizen.
