6.2  Arithmometers

Created as a prototype in 1822, Colmar's arithmometer was mass-produced starting in 1850, ushering in the era of commercial computing instruments. The business was continued by Colmar's son and then by Louis Payen, until 1915 when this type of calculator was surpassed. The digits of the addends are set on the sliders, the sliders move toothed wheels which, by engaging as many Leibniz cylinders, transmit the value to the accumulator located on the sliding carriage.
